The Allendale Ruritan Club will be holding a food drive from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2012. There will be two drop locations: Allendale Ruritan Club, Main Street, Allendale or Fastbreak Convenience Store, 1315 W. 9th St., Mt. Carmel. Food items can also be given to any Ruritan member. WADI received a $750 donation from Elks Lodge #1058 for the Tornado Relief effort in Ridgway and Harrisburg IL. Proceeds are from a pancake breakfast, several local lodges, state Elk funds, and $10 T-Shirt sales. | Tornado Hits Ridgway and Harrisburg |
|
Two towns in our service area were hit with a tornado early this morning, February 29, 2012: Harrisburg (Saline Co) and Ridgway (Gallatin Co). Our WADI offices are open in Shawneetown and Harrisburg and power has been restored to our offices though the hard hit areas of Harrisburg have not and Ameren says it may be out for as long as a week.

| Young Leaders Volunteer for WADI |

Members of the Edwards County Farm Bureau took time on January 28th to volunteer at the WADI office in Albion. They purchased $500 worth of food for the food pantry and sorted and bagged other food that had been donated or purchased. They were able to bag around 100 sacks of food to be given away to those who qualify in the month of February. Their volunteer effort was part of an American Farm

Hwy 45 between Mill Shoals and Enfield is under water on the Springerton curves. IDOT crews were still flagging people through at 12:30pm Sunday, May 1st.
Carmi has water over the road from the Little Wabash Bridge to Epworth Road. IDOT crews are flagging trucks and SUVs through. Closure may be imminent. Don't take chances.

The storm that went through Southern Illinois yesterday, April 19th, caused power outages throughout the area and damaged phone services. As of this morning there still isn't power in West Salem, Carmi, and parts of Fairfield. All WADI offices are open for business although phones services haven't been restored yet.

The statistics are staggering; this last recession has forced middle class families into poverty at alarming rates. The national poverty rate among children will soon hit a record high of 25%. Of children living with homeless parents, 43% of them are under the age of six. The situation in Chicago is even worse as the child poverty rate in the city is 31%.
