Reduction in Hours for Staff
Six WADI employees have been reduced to working 9 hours per week, starting August 2nd. We were holding out hope that a state budget would be approved and the reduction in hours could be avoided. Unfortunately, our hopes were in vain. Field Trip for the Saline I HS/EHS program
Saline 1 HS/EHS enjoyed a field trip on 4/9/15 to our local Pizza Hut.22 children, 10 parents and 7 staff had a wonderful time touring the facility. The great staff at Harrisburg Pizza Hut were awesome! A huge thank you to Phyllis Wood from Egyptian Health Department for teaching us to eat a variety of colors in our diet.

Saline 1 HS/EHS Family Fun Event with Pre-K
On February 26th Saline 1 Early Head Start/Head Start joined with Eldorado Pre-K for a dance party. The new online legal information center provides current civil legal information. The site can be accessed at twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The legal help center is the 77th such center to open in Illinois since 2007. A local planning committee developed the site.

Elks Lodge #1058 donates to WADI's Tornado Relief
WADI received a $750 donation from Elks Lodge #1058 for the Tornado Relief effort in Ridgway and Harrisburg IL. Proceeds are from a pancake breakfast, several local lodges, state Elk funds, and $10 T-Shirt sales. Tornado Hits Ridgway and Harrisburg
Two towns in our service area were hit with a tornado early this morning, February 29, 2012: Harrisburg (Saline Co) and Ridgway (Gallatin Co). Our WADI offices are open in Shawneetown and Harrisburg and power has been restored to our offices though the hard hit areas of Harrisburg have not and Ameren says it may be out for as long as a week. Young Leaders Volunteer for WADI
Members of the Edwards County Farm Bureau took time on January 28th to volunteer at the WADI office in Albion. They purchased $500 worth of food for the food pantry and sorted and bagged other food that had been donated or purchased. Mt Carmel Senior Center Changes Hands
The City of Mt Carmel will be taking over the Mt Carmel Senior Nutrition Center as of October 1, 2011. I watched Michael grow up, as he was a classmate to my son. I was their on-going room mother from Kindergarten through 8th grade. New Hope School is a small rural school where everyone is close. Egyptian Health Department is in Shawneetown today at the old IGA building giving free tetanus shots to anyone that has been involved in the flooding (victims, sand baggers, crews, etc)
Beware of Flooded Roads
Be very careful while driving due to road flooding. Don't drive across moving water; turn around and take another route. The town of Junction, Old Shawneetown and New Haven have been closed to the general public due to flooding. Four miles south of the intersection of Hwy 1 and 13 the road is closed. Utility Applications Still Being Taken
The LIHEAP program is still accepting applications for utility assistance through May 30, 2011. You do not have to be disconnected to receive assistance. Please call your local WADI office to make an appointment if you haven't already signed up for the program since September 1, 2010.
Storm Shuts Off Power and Phones
The storm that went through Southern Illinois yesterday, April 19th, caused power outages throughout the area and damaged phone services. As of this morning there still isn't power in West Salem, Carmi, and parts of Fairfield. All WADI offices are open for business although phones services haven't been restored yet.

The statistics are staggering; this last recession has forced middle class families into poverty at alarming rates. The national poverty rate among children will soon hit a record high of 25%.
